摘要:

Proactivity has long argued to be interpersonally risky, but not until recently have researchers started to examine the interpersonal outcomes of being proactive in the workplaces. While some studies confirmed the “risky” idea, others showed positive interpersonal consequences of proactivity for the actors. In the current study, drawing on personal identification theory and social comparison theory, we present an integrative model that simultaneously examine the interpersonal benefits and costs of being proactive. With one scenario-based experimental design and one cross-sectional design, we found that proactivity could increase both coworkers’ personal identification with and envy towards the proactive actor, which in turn influence coworkers’ helping and social undermining behavior towards the proactive actor. Moreover, coworkers’ proactive personality and self-esteem influence the strength of the relationships between proactivity and the positive (i.e., helping) and negative (i.e., undermining) interpersonal outcomes respectively. These findings encourage future studies to further examine the double-sword effect of proactivity on interpersonal relationships. 


 

主讲人介绍:

Zijun Cai is a lecture at the Business School, Beijing Normal University. He received his PhD training in the University of Western Australia. His research interests include proactive behavior, proactive personality, and vocational development. He has published several papers in Journal of Vocational Behavior, and is now an ad-hoc reviewer for Journal of Vocational Behavior and Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology.
