In this   paper, we investigate the trend of trade flows through intermediations in   China. We find that after China’s WTO accession, trade flows through   carry-along firms increase substantially. In contrast, trade flows through   intermediaries decrease sharply. The results are more pronounced for   carry-along firms that are located in the coastal areas. This confirms the   WTO accession mechanism by ruling out confounding factors.  We develop a matching model to rationalize   the empirical findings. In this model, each producer randomly matches with a   potential distributor, and endogenously select his exporting mode: exporting   directly, exporting through carry-along firms, or intermediaries. The model   shows that when the import tariff falls, more firms (producers) are likely to   exporting through carry-along firms than through intermediaries.
