摘要:The political strategy literature remains silent about how firms manage political connections when significant turbulence in the political environment makes it difficult to predict political power shifts and to identify the appropriate politicians to connect with. We address this gap by distinguishing firms’ action of adding new political connections from that of removing existing political connections. We posit that, whereas a firm continues to remove existing political connections as the political environment becomes increasingly turbulent, its addition of new political connections exhibits an inverted U-shaped relationship with political turbulence. These effects are moderated by the firm’s dependence on the government. We test our theory in a unique history context, the political turbulence resulting from the sweeping anti-corruption campaigns between 2012 and 2016 in China, and examine how Chinese publicly listed firms adjusted their political connections in response to such turbulence. The empirical results lend strong support to our theory.
